Barney in Animal Hospital: Hide Him or Snitch?

Meet Barney

Barney is a white-furred rabbit with narrow black eyes, a thick mustache, a burlap beret, and plaid brown pants - and, per the game’s lore, a dangerous serial killer on the run from the police. The wiki classifies him as a neutral anomaly: he never harms the player directly, and he has a strong affinity for coffee. His hidden anomaly form has a huge sharp-toothed mouth and hollow black eyes, and it brandishes the scalpel you eventually hand him.

Appearance Window and His Favor Chain

Barney first appears in the early shifts - the wiki’s article text puts his debut between Shifts 1-7 - and he can show up as many as three times in a single shift. His visits follow an escalating favor chain:

  1. Coffee. He says he has had a long day.
  2. Coffee again, if you helped the first time.
  3. His briefcase. He asks you to keep a heavy burgundy briefcase safe under your desk.
  4. Coffee plus a photo. Taking his picture is the first time you see his anomaly form.
  5. Coffee plus a scalpel.
  6. Hide me. The police are closing in, and he asks to hide inside your Reception Office.

Refusing at any earlier step just ends his visits: he threatens “You better watch out, I don’t like being refused,” but the wiki notes he never follows through - he simply stops returning. Turning him down early does not block the hiding request, though; he asks regardless.

Snitch Ending vs. No-Snitch Ending

Once Barney is hiding behind your desk, Officer Duckman walks in and asks whether you have seen him. This is the real decision point:

  • Turn Barney in (Snitch ending, 10 coins): Duckman calls for the arrest, Barney attacks and knocks the officer out - Duckman faints or dies and needs treatment to survive. Duckman gives you no reward for the tip.
  • Keep quiet (No Snitch ending, 15 coins): Duckman leaves, and Barney thanks you with his suitcase, which contains a second coffee machine (on a longer 300-second cooldown). The wiki calls this the recommended route, since extra coffee is a steady sanity engine for the rest of the run.

As for killing him: you cannot. Shooting or tasing Barney does nothing, unlike regular anomalies, and he cannot faint. He even shows up green on the Scanner - the wiki suspects an oversight, or simply that he deals no inherent damage. While he hides, talk to him and the mask slips: “friends do not turn each other to the police” and “If you speak, I will kill you, friend.”

Story Significance

Barney’s charm is a manipulation tactic - every message calls you “friend,” every favor granted earns a compliment, and every refusal earns a threat. The photo you take of him is the same one Officer Duckman later shows you, which is how the police got his face. Dr. Harlow mentions Barney regularly comes to the hospital to beg for coffee and once left behind a book titled “Advanced Quantum Mechanics for Geniuses,” hinting he is smarter than he acts. He has a clear disdain for Ratthew, calling him “small but dangerous,” and after handing over the coffee machine he never returns to the hospital. Whether his kindness to a loyal accomplice is genuine gratitude is left for players to judge - see the full character roster for how his arc compares to the others.
