Intern Class in Animal Hospital: Perks, Levels & Verdict

Every new player in Animal Hospital starts as the Intern, the rabbit-like creature in the white hoodie with the slightly unsettling smile. It costs nothing, asks nothing, and does exactly one thing: it makes your Sanity bar start higher.

What the Intern Actually Does

The Intern’s perk is pure starting Sanity. At level 1 you get 10 bonus Sanity, which means you begin a shift at 71% instead of the default 61%. Level up the class and the bonus grows to 15, then 20.

LevelPerk
1+10 bonus starting Sanity (71% instead of 61%)
2+15 bonus starting Sanity
3+20 bonus starting Sanity

Because Sanity is your health bar in this game, that head start matters more than it sounds. It buys you extra mistakes while you are still learning which patients are anomalies and which treatments go where.

Cost and How to Unlock

The Intern is free and equipped automatically the first time you join. There is nothing to buy. When you are ready for a paid class, the shop sits in the lobby: press the Classes button on the left side of your screen, or walk into the large yellow circle next to the ambulance, just left of the spawn point. Leveling works like every other class: level 2 takes 200 EXP and level 3 takes another 850 (1050 total), earned by checking in and treating patients.

Getting the Most Out of It

  • Spend your Intern shifts learning the loop, not chasing coins. Treating a patient pays 2 Animal Coins and rejecting an anomaly pays 0.5, so a few clean shifts fund your first class purchase quickly.
  • Use the extra Sanity as a learning budget. Starting at 71% means you can eat a scare or two and still recover with coffee, which restores 15 Sanity over three sips.
  • Do not hoard chocolate as the Intern. The 60-Sanity chocolate bar is precious, and your buffer perk means you usually need it less than teammates running utility classes.
  • A quirk worth knowing: the Intern is the only class with multiple color variants (green, blue, pink) in multiplayer, added so players can tell each other apart.

The Honest Verdict

The Intern sits in C tier on our class tier list, and that is not an insult so much as a description of its job. A flat Sanity bonus is genuinely useful in your first hours, and the extra health means more room for coffee-fueled recoveries early on. But every coin class eventually eclipses it. The Nurse costs only 20 Animal Coins and trades a bit of starting comfort for inventory space you will use all run, and by the time you can afford the Secretary or Doctor, bonus starting Sanity alone simply cannot compete with perks that generate Sanity continuously.

So the verdict is simple: play the Intern until your first 20 coins, enjoy the cushion, then upgrade without looking back. There is no reason to invest EXP in leveling the Intern past what you earn naturally, since those same shifts of EXP would be better spent leveling the class you actually plan to keep.
