Sam in Animal Hospital: Hiring the $250 Hazmat Helper
Getting to Know Sam
Sam is a calico cat - white face, one big orange patch, one black patch - wearing a bright yellow hazmat suit with black trim, blue protective gloves, a utility belt, and boots. One of their pink inner ears carries a bite mark. Sam uses they/them pronouns (the developers changed this shortly after release so players could interpret their gender freely), and they are the first calico cat in the game. Their own words sum up the job pitch: “I can handle the slime… and some anomalies.” Sam is not an anomaly.
When Sam Arrives
Sam is tied to Slime Shifts, which have a chance to occur from Shift 10 onward - the wiki lists Sam’s first appearance falling between Shifts 11 and 24, always after the player finishes the first Slime Shift. During a Slime Shift, slime spreads across floors, walls, ceilings, and item cases while the Hazmat Team handles cleanup; once it ends, Sam appears at the check-in window looking for work. Slime Shifts can repeat multiple times per run, and Sam comes back for rehire after every one. They joined the game in the July 25, 2026 “The Hazmat Team Arrives” update, alongside Slimebert and the Journal.
Should You Pay the $250?
Hiring Sam costs $250 and buys you three shifts of help. During that window they will:
- Clean up slime left around the hospital
- Get rid of Hiders, the wall-blending enemies that chase you on approach
- Extinguish room fires, one of the recurring room events that drains 1-3 sanity per second if you stand close
After three shifts Sam leaves, no matter what, and you wait for the next Slime Shift to rehire them. If you decline, there is no recorded penalty - you simply handle fires, Hiders, and leftover slime yourself. For solo players deep into a run, offloading fire duty and Hider removal while you juggle check-ins and treatments is usually worth the money; $250 is cheap insurance across the harder late shifts. One caution from the wiki: if an anomaly attacks Sam, you have much less time to save them than a regular patient, so do not leave them hanging.
Expect some comedy for your money too - Sam is clumsy, and during their three shifts they may trip over their boots, spray themself, or drop their scrubber.
Backstory and Lore Notes
Sam’s outfit and first-encounter dialogue tell the story: they worked for the Animal Corporation as a hazmat cleanup employee on the Hazmat Team before being fired for reasons the game never explains. Unable to find other work, they now sell the same skills to the hospital shift by shift. That makes Sam one of several ex-Corporation figures orbiting the hospital - alongside Liz, fired for reporting the truth, and Rattina, who vanished - though unlike them, Sam shows no interest in digging into the company’s secrets; they are simply practical and willing to do dangerous work. Their Journal entry, “Sam first encounter,” pays 5 Animal Coins just for meeting them. A small crossover detail: you can photograph Sam with Liz’s UV Camera. Beyond the firing, the wiki records nothing more about their past - what Sam saw on the inside of Animal Corp’s cleanup operation is not documented on the community wiki. See the full character list for how they fit among the hospital’s recurring visitors.
