Mimic in Animal Hospital: Spot It Before It Attacks

A Patient That Isn’t One

The Mimic is the hospital’s infiltrator: a dangerous anomaly that walks in disguised as a normal patient, often showing no signs of infection at check-in. Underneath the disguise, every Mimic has sharp teeth and a gaping, slime-flecked mouth. It turns hostile after being admitted, during treatment, while recovering, or when given Maple Syrup, an Organ, a Transplant, or Cough Syrup. The tell is always the same: it says “I’m hungry…”, lets out a loud growl, transforms, then crawls or staggers toward the nearest player or patient - including animals sitting in the Waiting Area. (If you have seen the names “skin walker” or “shapeshifter,” those are the same creature - see the Skin Walker page.)

The Damage It Deals

A Mimic biting a player costs 6 sanity per bite, and the Sanity page clocks the bites at roughly one every half-second to a second - among the fastest drains in the game. To escape, hold or repeatedly press E about 5-6 times to strike its pressure points and break free, losing sanity for every moment it hangs on.

If it attacks a patient instead, an emergency starts: knock the Mimic out in time and the rescued patient panics and flees; fail, and it counts as a recorded animal death. A Mimic can kill its target in under 20 seconds, so an emergency is a sprint, not a jog.

Reading the Disguise Early

The wiki documents several ways to unmask a Mimic before it lunges:

  • Watch treated patients. A Mimic may say “I’m hungry…” right after one treatment, climb off the bed, and attack. Observe patients for a minute after treatment instead of turning your back.
  • Mimics cannot faint. Leave a square of fire in the path to the bed: a real animal faints, a Mimic walks through. (Ratthew and Ron also never faint, but neither is ever an anomaly.)
  • The shift will not end. If every room looks done but the end-of-shift checklist never appears, at least one remaining “patient” is a Mimic.
  • Peek inside the model. At the Reception Office, the camera feed or a snapped photo can let you look inside a visitor’s model - a hidden mouth means a Mimic.

Putting One Down

The gun stops a Mimic in one shot, making the Secret Agent class the cleanest answer. The taser works too and refunds +2 sanity for tasing an anomaly; Mimics are slower than you, so you can outrun one to the Reception Office taser. Bare-handed fighting works as a last resort - in multiplayer, several players can pile on to drop it faster, and only the targeted player loses sanity. You can even lure one into a Bed Monster’s red box and let the grab do the work. Afterward, refill with coffee or chocolate.

One caution from the wiki: leading a Mimic to a patient to skip treatments works, but if that patient is secretly an anomaly, it becomes a Mimic after being saved.

What the Journal Pays

Being attacked by a Mimic unlocks its Journal entry for 20 Animal Coins - the flavor text describes something that walks in quiet and calm but came because it is starving. Luring one into the Bed Monster’s grab adds up to 25 more coins.
