Skin Walker in Animal Hospital: The Mimic Explained
One Monster, Three Names
Players searching for the “skin walker” in Animal Hospital are all hunting the same creature. On the official wiki, both the Skin Walker page and the Shapeshifter page are redirects to the Mimic - the community coined the folklore names because of what it does: it wears the appearance of a normal animal patient and walks into the hospital as one of them. So if a video or post warns you about a skin walker, every mechanic below is Mimic behavior, and the full Mimic guide covers it in more depth.
How the Disguise Works
The Mimic varies in appearance from run to run, but under the fake patient there are always sharp teeth and a gaping mouth with slime in it. It typically shows no signs of infection at check-in - the disguise holds up to a casual look. It drops the act after being admitted, while being treated, while recovering, or when fed Maple Syrup, an Organ, a Transplant, or Cough Syrup. Right before transforming it says “I’m hungry…”, growls loudly, and then goes after the nearest player or patient, Waiting Area included.
There are documented cracks in the costume. A disguised Mimic cannot faint, so a patch of fire on its path to the bed exposes it - real patients drop, Mimics keep walking. A shift also refuses to end while a Mimic is alive, so an end-of-shift checklist that never appears means one of your “patients” is fake. And at the Reception Office, checking the CCTV or a snapped photo can reveal a mouth model hidden inside a visitor.
The Cost of Getting Caught
When it attacks a player, each bite takes 6 sanity, landing roughly every half-second to a second. You break free by holding or mashing E around 5-6 times to hit its pressure points. Since the whole sanity bar is your health - 0% is death - a Mimic latched onto a low-sanity player is one of the fastest ways to die in the game. If it targets a patient instead, you get an emergency with under 20 seconds to intervene before the kill becomes a recorded animal death.
Removing It
- Shoot it. One shot from the gun drops a Mimic instantly - the Secret Agent’s starting weapon makes this trivial.
- Tase it. The taser stops it too and pays you +2 sanity for tasing an anomaly. Mimics move slower than you, so kiting one while you fetch the Reception Office taser is a documented play.
- Swarm it. In multiplayer, several players can beat one down by hand together; only the player being bitten loses sanity.
- Feed it to the Bed Monster. Lure it into the Bed Monster’s red grab box and let one anomaly delete the other.
When defeated, the Mimic collapses, reverts to its patient disguise, and runs out of the hospital in fear - a strangely gentle ending for a monster with that mouth.
Journal Credit
Because the skin walker is the Mimic, there is no separate Journal entry under that name. Surviving a Mimic attack logs the Mimic entry for 20 Animal Coins, and the Bed Monster lure adds up to 25 more - both detailed in the Journal guide.
