The Stalker in Animal Hospital: How to Avoid It

The Thing Around the Corner

The Stalker is one of the debut enemies of Animal Hospital, and it is the game’s purest “don’t look” monster. Its Journal entry sums up the whole encounter: it waits around corners, watching, and one look is all it takes to lose your sanity - so keep your eyes down. Unlike the Mimic or the Bed Monster, it never chases or grabs you; the danger is entirely in your own camera.

The wiki’s sources do not give a detailed physical description of the Stalker, so treat any appearance claims you see elsewhere with caution. What is documented is how the game itself reacts to it: scanning it with the Scanner shows a purple beam and a ”???” symbol - the same unknown reading as Dr. Harlow and Slimebert - meaning even your equipment cannot classify it. Ron from Accounting adds the best flavor detail on record: he says it often appears in the corner of his eye, dislikes being looked at, and is “actually shy.”

What Eye Contact Costs

The damage model is simple and flat: seeing the Stalker costs 10 sanity at the moment of eye contact. Both the Journal and the Sanity page agree on that number. No per-second drain is documented for lingering near it - the hit comes from the look itself, which is why the counter-play is about where you point your screen, not where you stand.

The Stalker can also appear at the check-in window in the Reception Office. While it is registered there, the shutters lock - trying to close them gives the message “something is blocking the shutters…”, the same block a Head Banger causes.

Staying Sane Around It

  • Keep your eyes down. This is the official advice from its own Journal entry. If you sense it around a corner, look at the floor and move on.
  • Photograph it at the window. When the Stalker appears at the check-in window, taking a picture of it makes it disappear - this is its one documented banish.
  • Do not waste weapons. The Stalker is one of only two entities (with Barney) that cannot be tased or shot. The taser’s +2 sanity refund on anomalies does not apply here; save the charge for a Mimic.
  • Guard Rattina’s photo. If you carry the photo from the vault near the Stalker at the Reception Office, it burns in your hands and is gone.

The Rattina Theory

Is the Stalker actually Rattina? The wiki never says so outright, but it documents the evidence players cite. Rattina worked for the Animal Corporation and disappeared without a trace; sticky notes in Liz’s house question whether she saw something she was not supposed to. The vault behind Room 5’s cat poster holds her photograph next to a note reading “The experiment was a success, the ‘Shadow’ now sees everything.” And if you bring that photograph to the Stalker, it burns. That is the full documented case - suggestive, deliberately so, but unconfirmed.

Logging It in the Journal

Seeing the Stalker (and eating the -10 sanity) unlocks its Journal entry for 10 Animal Coins. If your sanity is healthy, taking the hit once on purpose is a fair trade for the reward - just top back up with coffee afterward.
